Mission Statement

AkronReads is a community tutoring partnership between the Akron Public Schools and local businesses, government agencies, nonprofit and civic organizations. Since 1999, thousands of trained literacy tutors have helped Akron students K-3 to reach new goals in achieving literacy and competence.

Description

Sometimes just knowing someone believes in you is all that’s needed to help you achieve. Volunteering with AkronReads allows you to invest in our children by giving them a priceless gift: your time.

"Many of these children do not have a stable family situation that gives them the one-on-one attention they need to learn and read effectively," says Jim Weber, AkronReads tutor and City of Akron employee. "In only one hour a week, you can see the difference in their skill level and their confidence."

Just one hour a week. That’s all it takes to instill pride and self-confidence in a child and help set them on a path toward success.
