The mission of Reading Legacies is to empower children and youth as VALUED family and community members through intergenerational read aloud experiences.
The current challenges in families and society are causing not only a lack of educational support for our young people, but perhaps more importantly, the emotional support of committed role models and family members giving of themselves through shared-reading time. It is our goal to re-institutionalize this activity throughout San Diego County. Our primary target is children and youth in at-risk situations, giving them opportunities to gain confidence and self-esteem through shared-reading experiences through our two programs, Community Connections and Family Connections. In our Community Connections program, we target at-risk youth who may be unsupervised after school and are vulnerable for gangs and drugs. In our Family Connections program, we serve children and youth who have incarcerated family members whose withdrawal from their lives causes confusion, guilt, and fears.
