Mission Statement

The purpose of Read for Literacy, a non-profit organization, is to recruit non-reading adults and teach them basic English literacy and employability skills, one-on-one and in groups, so they may participate in, benefit from and contribute to our community; to train volunteer tutors; and to promote interest in literacy in northwest Ohio.

Description

Read for Literacy provides one-on-one and small group tutoring to adults who lack basic literacy skills. Meetings take place at branch libraries throughout the Toledo-Lucas County public library. Tutors are required to complete a training session before being assigned to a student. Tutors meet with their students twice a week.

My Grandfather could not read. His job was as a custodian. He would bring notes from his job at the medical bldg. across from the Toledo Art Museum to my Grandmother. She would read the note that said what was needed to be done the next day. No one ever embarassed him even though we suspect they knew he could not read. I feel that the things I have read, newspapers, books and peridicals have definitely helped me to be secure in my life as it is. I'm very appreciative of my life and my values. Without that ability to read my familys living status may not have been as great as it was. Two of my children graduated from college with no student loans. That can be traced to my own ability to read and understand my jobs, my families needs and my personal giving back to our great society.
