Since 1974 Neighborhood Health Services (NHS) has provided quality and affordable health services to the uninsured and underinsured of the Big Bend area. We have a comprehensive primary health care clinical unit. An integral component of NHS' primary and preventive health care system is to address health care disparities in underserved populations.
Services include: physical exams, chronic disease management for diabetics and hypertension, blood pressure checks, adult immunizations, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, urgent care, follow-ups from emergency room referrals.
In addition to the Medical clinic, NHS provides: In-house specialty clinics for NHS patients, which include: mental health, gynecology, orthopedics, endocrinology, cardiology, nutrition, etc. Referrals to the WeCare program are provided to eligible patients whose medical needs are such that they require longer-term specialty medical care (e.g., surgery) and referrals to the Health Department for mammograms. Free social work services and medical case management. Free transportation assistance for patients with no access and no funds for transportation. Legal Aid service for patients having legal matters, volunteer Lawyers comes once a month. Hygiene items are distributed upon request.
