Mission Statement
The Sovereign Art Foundation is a charity registered in the UK and Hong Kong that has two charitable objectives, 1) To raise the exposure of mid-career contemporary artists in Asia, and, 2) To raise money to support charities and art projects that provide under-privileged children art and creative workshops in Asia. The Foundation achieves these two objectives through The Sovereign Asian Art Prize whereby the finalists of the prize are exhibited throughout Asia and all but the prize winner are auctioned off in Hong Kong with half the proceeds going to the artist and half the proceeds going directly to charity. Since it’s inauguration in 2004, The Sovereign Asian Art Prize has helped the Sovereign Art Foundation raise over US$4 million which has been used to both organise and fund existing charitable projects in Asia that help disadvantaged children using the arts as rehabilitation, education and therapy.
Description
The Sovereign Art Foundation uses the money it raises to both organise and fund existing charitable projects in Asia and Africa that help disadvantaged children using the arts as rehabilitation, education and therapy. Current projects the Foundation support include the M’Lop Tapang’s street kids of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, Kalki in Pondicherry, India and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation arts programme in both Vietnam and Mongolia. In addition to the support provided to these established charities and projects, the Foundation is also funding its own 'Make it Better’ project which aims to empower disadvantaged children in Hong Kong through the use art therapy in specially designed workshops. The Foundation aims to gather research from this project with the aim of understanding how art therapy has the ability to empower children in under-privileged districts of Hong Kong and the affect this has on the communities in which they live.
