Mission Statement

IYLI was established in 1989 to help African American and Latino high school students develop the ability to apply a global perspective to community and individual challenges. IYLI sponsors school-year programs for New York City high school students, and summer overseas study programs for students nationwide.

Community and public service is at the core of what we do. Whether it be through volunteering in a neighborhood organization or participating in a one-month overseas study program in Africa, students learn about community challenges and develop their own ideas and strategies for bringing about positive social change.

Description

Volunteers play a major role in the International Youth Leadership Institute. In fact, though IYLI has had several paid staff members in recent years, since the organization's founding in 1989 IYLI has been staffed almost exclusively by volunteers.
