The mission of the Fire Lookout Host Program is to preserve, staff and maintain the San Bernardino National Forest Fire Lookout towers and educate the public on fire prevention and forest health. The Fire Lookouts help in the first line of fire defense by: Staffing 7 lookout towers across the San Bernardino National Forest, spotting smoke and reporting its location and status. Assisting the U.S.Forest Service with radio communication. Assisting Dispatch/Fire Suppression staff by providing accurate weather reports. Interpreting the natural and cultural history of the Fire Lookouts and surrounding forest and natural resources. Greeting over 15,000 visitors a year. Helping in refurbishing and rebuilding Fire Lookouts.

The Big Bear Discovery Center is an educational and informational portal to the San Bernardino National Forest and is located in the heart of the Big Bear Valley. Our goal is to heighten visitor awareness on how to become a more responsible caretaker of the national forest while increasing their enjoyment and knowledge of the San Bernardino National Forest. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for all interests. Some of those are Naturalist, Information Specialist, helping with Special Events (concerts, fundraisers, etc.), Visitor Greeter, School Programs, helping at the Adventure Outpost (a nature themed gift store), Campfires and Nature Nights, Crafts, and Nature Walks. Orientation and training classes are held throughout the year. We welcome you to bring your skills and interests to the Discovery Center!

The Off-Highway Vehicle Program partners with the USDA Forest Service to teach visitors trail ethics, land and resource stewardship, and maintain and patrol trails to promote responsible recreation on public lands. Become involved in patrols, restoration and trail maintenance, or become a site steward. You can also help with Education Outreach. Off-Highway Vehicle volunteers are the "eyes and ears" of the U.S. Forest Service. Here's a way to combine your love of off roading with helping others!
