Mission Statement

Literacy Volunteers on the Green is a non-profit organization providing free English as a Second Language and literacy instruction to adults in Northern Fairfield and Litchfield counties in CT.

Our goal is for students to become independent readers, writers, listeners and speakers of English, allowing them to gain comprehension through natural, authentic, real life activities and experiences. We help adults to achieve their goals and build community connections through instruction provided by tutors who are recruited, trained and supported by our organization.

Description

Our organization targets adult non-English speakers since we feel there is currently an urgent need, however, we also provide literacy instruction to native speakers of English.
We offer flexible class schedules based on the availability of students and tutors. Each student's needs are very individual. Some are not literate in their native language, while others are college graduates and have had professional careers in their countries of origin. Individual needs can be met because of our ability to offer small group instruction, one on one if necessary.
We recently added a family literacy program, Motheread/Fatheread, which provides encouragement, support and instruction to families and caregivers.
