MISSION ALLIANCE FOR STUDENTS OF THE ARTS:

Supports grassroots organizations that promote justice and social empowerment via the arts and media.

HOW MASA CAME TO BE:

It was the imminent displacement of many Ethnic Arts Organizations in the Mission during the "Dot.com Explosion" in the later part of the '90s that mobilized ethnic dance and music students who were committed to protecting the distinctive cultural environment that had flourished for decades in this culturally fertile neighborhood.

For instance, it was the near eviction of tenants of the Dance Mission Cultural Center in the Winter of 2000 that first rallied the ethnic arts community to come to the aid of this much loved and widely used cultural and community resource center. Since then, students of the Mission Arts Community have become greatly proactive in seeking grants and organizing fundraising events to support their favorite community dance and music organizations.

Although the "Dot.com Boom" is all but history now, history is always prone to repeating itself, and to that end, MASA endeavors to preserve and support the Cultural Arts Community of the Mission District. And, as Students of the Arts, we will strive to disseminate what we' ve learned in this "Cultural Hub" to the residents of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Description
