Mission Statement

The mission of Extras for Creative Reuse (Extras) is to help children awaken their creative potential in education and play through the use of reusable, recycled, and surplus material in classrooms, after-school and summer programs, and pre-school educational settings.

As a membership organization offering materials and expertise, Extras is a resource for children, educators, students, and program providers who are looking for ways to engage children in creative learning while making an environmental impact through recycling--helping both children and the environment.

Description

Extras is an organization that recovers usable materials from regional manufacturers and gives them to teachers, out of school providers, and early childhood educators who use them to create artistic projects that enhance traditional learning experiences.

In addition Extras provides outreach professional development workshops for teachers and providers as well as in-school workshop demonstrations and on-site activities for children.

Additionally, Extras provides low cost materials to educators and providers that are used both for arts projects and as tactile, manipulative enhancements to lessons in mathematics, literacy, and other disciplines. Lesson preparation and mentoring are also available at the Extras center

MELISSA ALBO : As the membership coordinator intern for 2 months, I have learned a lot from working at EXTRAS. Majoring in business, I had the opportunity to put to use what I learned in the classroom. I have never worked for a nonprofit and I am glad I had this opportunity to learn about Creative Reuse centers and the challenges of managing a nonprofit. I improved my communication skills and worked on various new software and applications. Jocelyn, the Executive Director, was always there to help me if I needed any guidance. Working for EXTRAS has been a positive experience that I will never forget! Melissa ALBO
