Mission Statement

The Puerto Rican Family Institute was founded in 1960 as a non-profit organization in New York State that offers a comprehensive array of social and health care services that are culturally and linguistically relevant. Its core services include mental health treatment, crisis intervention, placement prevention, residential care and education. The Puerto Rican Family Institute is committed to quality care, ensuring access to treatment and executing its clinical, residential and administrative responsibilities in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Its programs operate in the continental United States and Puerto Rico and serve a large immigrant population.

Description

Outpatient treatment services are provided to children, adolescents and their families as well as adults using bilingual and bicultural diagnostic and treatment services. The Adolescent Day Treatment Program offers a highly intensive therapeutic environment for severely emotionally disturbed youth. Foster care placement prevention programs provide services to families at risk to prevent placement and shorten stays in foster care. Supportive case management services provide stabilization and crisis intervention for homeless mentally ill persons. Intermediate care facilities specialize in developing skills for independent living in a home-like environment for developmentally disabled adults. The Vacunas Desde La Cuna Project is an immunization drive to reach children in underserved areas. The Puerto Rican Family Institute serves as a lead agency for the development of HIV services in the South Bronx and northeast Brooklyn. The Partial Hospitalization Program is a 6-week intensive treatment program for seriously and persistently mentally ill adults in Brooklyn that provides a continuum of alternative services for those at risk of hospitalization. Home-based Crisis Intervention is an innovative program in Brooklyn and Queens that assists patients in the transition from inpatient or crisis care back to the community.
