The EQUUS Foundation is the only national charitable foundation dedicated solely to improving the quality of life of horses and fostering the horse-human bond in the United States. Donations help to reduce the unwanted horse population, retrain horses for multiple careers, and make equine therapy available to more people.
For us, it's all about how horses move people beyond their boundaries - both in sport and in public service. Now in our 13th year, we have awarded nearly $3 million in grants to horse rescues and equine therapy organizations across the United States and close to 1,000 equine organizations participate on our Equine Welfare Network.
These facilities are hard at work every day not only rescuing and rehabbing neglected and abused horses but also tapping into the power of horses to help heal people, especially those with special needs. We make sure they are operating at the highest standards for horse care & use.
There are an estimated 200,000 unwanted horses in the US. Tragically, many are slaughtered. Instead, these horses can be rescued & rehabilitated. Many can be re-trained as therapy horses to help serve the more than 50 million people with disabilities. One in 88 children lives with Autism. One in 4 veterans have PTSD. Our challenge is to make equine therapy available to more people.
Our goal is to ensure the proper care and use of horses, and for as many people as possible to benefit from the horse's unique ability to empower, teach, and heal. A horse with a home and a purpose is a happy horse!
