Description

The Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project is the only borough-wide provider of pro bono legal services in Brooklyn. Cases are staffed by attorneys from the private bar who volunteer to do cases pro bono for indigent clients who cannot afford representation. In addition, staff attorneys in the office offer brief advice and counsel, give information and referrals, assign cases to private attorneys, and co-counsel or supervise private attorneys as needed. The VLP also provides services such as Senior LEAP (a legal education outreach program), the Home and Hospital Program for Persons with AIDS and Senior Citizens, the Consumer Bankruptcy Panel, the Family Law Project, CLARO (a pro se consumer law clinic)and more. The program's volunteers handle cases primarily in the areas of Family Law, Wills and Estates, and Consumer Law, and its services are focused on, but not limited to, women, victims of domestic violence, the elderly and the disabled.
