Mission Statement

The Society is dedicated to improving the quality of life and self-sufficiency of physically challenged children and adults in Stanislaus County.

Description

The Society was founded in 1947 as the "Stanislaus County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc." Through several name revisions, we have remained an independent, locally supported organization providing services and programs designed to enhance the quality of life for physically-challenged individuals of all ages and all disabilities who reside in Stanislaus County. Over these past 60 years, our funding and support came from private sources, which have enabled us to provide a wide variety of programs and services.

Society for Handicapped provides opportunities for recreation for disabled children and adults in our snow and water ski programs. We also coordinated an adapted bike camp for disabled children to learn the skill of riding a two wheeled bike.

Many individuals of all ages in our community do not have health insurance or the financial resources to purchase the medical and adaptive equipment they need to maintain their health and independence. The Society for disABILITIES Special Needs Fund Program was born in 1987 to help meet these basic needs and become a safety net for those who need it most. Today, as more of our population is uninsured, our community ages and health care costs rise, more and more people need assistance to purchase necessary health aids and adaptive equipment.

The Society for disABILITIES maintains a Loan Closet of adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, bedside commodes, walkers, crutches, slide boards, and shower chairs. This free service is made available to anyone in need, from those experiencing a temporary disability to someone with a permanent disability.

As a person with a disABILITY I understand the need for the recreational programs The Society offers. I not only work for them but I participate as well. There are limited sports and recreational opportunities for people like me. The Society has the adapted equipment which costs sometimes, 4 or 5 times the same price for able bodied equipment. I encourage everyone with a disability to check us out.
