Description

Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center (PPTRC) is a non profit organization committed to delivering the highest quality of therapeutic horseback riding to people with disabilities. PPTRC is a "Premier Accredited" member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), which is the governing body for therapeutic riding programs in North America. For 25 years we have provided equine-assisted activities to riders ages 2 and older facing physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and learning challenges including head injuries, developmental delays, autism, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, Down's Syndrome, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis.

PPTRC offers two types of riding programs. The first is Therapeutic Riding classes which emphasize independence. Individuals learn basic riding skills (such as mounting/dismounting, riding positions, maneuvering the horse, and various gaits), which promote physical, emotional and psychological developments. The second type of riding is Hippotherapy. PPTRC is the only therapeutic riding center to offer this program in all of southern Colorado. Physical, occupational and speech therapists evaluate individuals needing this specialized therapy and lead the treatments. The treatments challenge the riders' balance, improve their posture, strengthen their muscles and reduce their spasticity.
