Mission Statement

To save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.

Description

The American Lung Association is America's oldest voluntary health organization, founded in 1904, we began our fight dedicated to combating tuberculosis (TB), the most dreaded disease at the time. Over the next 50-year fight, we played a critical role in developing and funding increasingly effective weapons to prevent, detect and treat disease. As TB was brought under control, the focus expanded to all lung diseases including asthma, tobacco control, COPD, lung cancer and environmental issues.

We are dedicated to the prevention, control and cure of lung disease; third leading cause of death in the United States. We work to prevent, control and cure lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, influenza, and pneumonia, and we fight for tobacco control and clean air through education, research and advocacy.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in both men and women in the United States. It takes more people then breast, colon and prostate combined. We continue to raise awareness to lung disease through community outreach.
