Mission Statement
FRIENDS OF THE MEMORIAL LIBRARY, INC, founded in 1973, is an auxiliary of concerned citizens dedicated to enhancing the services provided by the Los Angeles Public Library; who care about libraries and who are interested in promoting the welfare and growth of the library. The organization's primary activities include promoting goodwill and support by the community for the library; stimulating public awareness of library needs; seeking out sources, cultural and educational programs for the library.
Description
FRIENDS OF THE MEMORIAL LIBRARY, INC represents what is best about our city - volunteers giving their own time and directly or indirectly other resources to support something that is important for the community's future as a civilised, literate, educated and informed society.
The Los Angeles Public Library serves the largest urban population of any library in the country. Its Central Library, 71 branch libraries, six million books and state-of-the-art technology provide everyone with free and easy access to information and the opportunity for life-long learning.
Friends of Libraries groups are usually the only voice the library user community has in seeking to improve - or in some cases unfortunately protect - their libraries. Friends of Libraries is the only national voice representing the needs and aspirations of those millions of library users.
