The Sea Cadet Mission

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a nationwide organization dedicated to helping American youth realize personal success and achievement through a nautical orientated training program. Through Sea Cadet leadership young Americans ages 11-17 develop interest and skills in basic seamanship and its naval adaptions, while learning the value of patriotism. courage, self reliance, teamwork and accountability.

Description

The local unit in Memphis, TN is the Tennessee BB-43 Division, located at NSA Mid South, Millington, TN. The organization's leadership are adult volunteers who are active duty Navy or civilians who provide their expertise, leadership and skills to develop and mentor cadets 11-17 years old from western TN and bordering states.

The TN BB-43 trains each month, every third weekend, year round. Additional training opportunities are available during the spring, summer and winter months when schools are not in session. These additional trainings are held throughout the US, Canada and 12 foreign countries with other cadet programs.

The USNSCC is an extra curriculum program not affiliated with any public or private school enterprise and is administered by the Navy League of the United States.

Local support is via the Greater Memphis Navy League council and additional fundraisers are fulfilled by local unit activities and events to continued education, trainings, uniform and administration expenses which allow cadets opportunities to promote positive reflection of themselves within their community, the US Naval Sea Cadets, USN and Navy League.

Cadets are eligible for local unit, regional and national awards each year. The cadets personnel achievements do not go unrecognized as they are awarded citizenship, Academic Achievement, Honor Cadet, National Honor Cadet, Meritorious Recognition, Unit Commendation, Citation Awards for outstanding achievements. Several outside organizations recognize their achievements including the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, Naval Research and Science, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The goal of this program is provide a positive influence to youth by recognition of their accomplishments at both the local and national levels and to uphold the three Navy Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Teaching youth alternate choices of positive participation in a drug free, gang free environment and the importance of giving back to the community through local community service projects and events that can reward and benefit someone you may not know.

The US Naval Sea Cadets also offer scholarships to further education after leaving the USNSCC program and encourages the cadets to strive in the positive direction to make a better person, a better community and a better citizen.
