NARSAD's mission is to alleviate suffering from mental illness by raising funds for scientific research on psychiatric brain disorders. Formerly known as the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, NARSAD is the largest donor-supported organization in the world dedicated to finding the causes, better treatments, and eventual cures for mental illnesses.

Description

Since the inception of its grant programs in 1987, NARSAD has awarded more than $256 million in research funding to more than 2,900 scientists in the United States and 28 other countries.

These funds are awarded to early-career and established scientists to help them pursue advances in understanding the causes of mental illness, their biological mechanisms, and new pathways for better treatments and cures.

Medical research offers real hope to those sufferieng from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders (including PTSD and OCD), and childhood mental illnesses (such as autism and ADHD). Over the past two decades, NARSAD has played a seminal role in the growing understanding of mental illnesses as biologically-based brain disorders, and it continues to lead the field in its support of innovative, cutting-edge research.
