Mission Statement

Helping preserve Highland County's past for the enrichment of present and future generations.

Description

The Highland Historical Society owns and operated the Highland County Museum and Heritage Center in McDowell, Va. The museum houses an Orientation Room that highlights the Civil War Battle of McDowell, the first victory in Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson's Valley Campaign. The museum was used as a hospital during and after the battle. Other exhibits space spotlights local Highland County history with rotating exhibits and a permanent installation on the historic Staunton-To-Parkersburg Turnpike. The museum building served as a hotel on the pike during its heyday. In addition, the museum has a gift shop, storage facilities and the historical society office. In the future, a genealogical library will be added as well as an education center.

Biennially, the Highland Historical Society along with co-sponsors hosts McDowell Battlefield Heritage Days - which focuses on the history of the 1860s in the Virginia Highlands. It is the largest Civil War reenactment on the East Coast. For the past two events, a little more than 1,000 have participated. It is the major fundraiser for the organization.
