Description

I am looking to recruit 100 volunteers to volunteer 1 hour a week at the school, for the enitre school year, to be a Reading Hero to a student who is reading below grade level.

I am a paraprofessional at Lovell Elementary. I came to this school as a volunteer 3 1/2 years ago to help bring food to children to take home for the weekend. 91% of the 720 children at our school receive free breakfast and free or reduced lunch Monday-Friday. Most of these children do not have enough food to make it through the weekend. From the moment that I walked onto the campus of Lovell Elementary in Apopka, Florida, I felt sincere appreciation from the staff and the students. I fell in love with the school and Mr. Aguirre, the school Principal, saw that I had compassion and love for all of these children and offered me a job.

These children have so many different needs because a great majority are English language learners, but also because of the poverty that they live in. This year I have started a food pantry at the school and give out food on a weekly basis to students and families in need. If individuals walk onto our campus seeking food assistance, they are given bags of food. I will be running this pantry during the summer as well.

I have also started a school garden that each grade level has been able to plant and care for vegetable plants and flowers. I am hoping to expand this garden program to families in the coming school year. Several families will be chosen to plant and work the garden during the Fall, Spring, and Summer. The students and families with care for garden and be able to take home the produce for their families.

I am trying to establish a bilingual library to increase reading literacy for our ELL students and their families. I would also like to create a reading mentor program to bring in adults from the community that will be paired with a child that is struggling in reading. As a former volunteer, I know how much these children are seeking positive attention from adults, and I know they would benefit greatly from the addition of a mentor reading program at our school.
