Description

Pike County Volunteers are an integral part of our staff helping the senior’s of Pike County. With time given to come into the office to help answer phones taking names and directing consumers when they come to the centers. They are at our senior centers helping prepare our homebound meals that go out to our neighbors in need, packing up goody bags filled with juice, fruit, nutritious soups, bread and the occasional cake. They arrive early in the morning ready to assist in all areas of getting the meal out with the driver who will be delivering meals that day. The driver's, using their own vehicles, go out weekly to deliver these meals. Being the caring individuals that they are, they take the time to check on and just chat a minute with our homebound people. Always sharing a smile, a touch or information that we are here to help. We have other volunteers who use their own vehicles to transport Seniors in our county to doctor appointments, working through our Pike County Transportation Department. They work tirelessly driving those who are unable to drive for themselves. There are seniors who come in weekly and use their gift of craftsmanship to create a small candy cane to go to the homebound meal consumers with notes of encouragement and caring. Some spend their own dollars, to create pillows or scarves, placemats or lap blankets to give to the center to gift to our seniors, or sell and make a dollar to help to continue the project to bring a little joy to the homebound with little mementos they make. They sit and talk with other people who come into the center, play games, or call bingo. Some volunteers help by shopping for their neighbors who may not be physically mobile, and some contact our seniors by phone just to say hello, a friendly voice on the other end who will just listen. Other volunteers become an Ombudsman volunteer, going through specific training to assist residents of nursing homes advocating for their personal rights. Lets not forget the APPRISE program volunteers, assisting all seniors with their insurance questions on the Medicare program and continued changes that happen yearly or the Tax preparer volunteers, who train through AARP for Free tax help to those in need. Yes, Pike County Volunteers are a very important part of Pike County Area Agency on Aging, and we can’t do these things without them. Today’s economy has gotten even tougher, and we are looking for your help. We always have room for more volunteers. Could you spare some time to help share your smile today?
