Mission Statement

The simple act of smiling is an indicator of one’s outlook on life and their emotional health. The importance and impact of smiling, though, often are overlooked. DSM - The Don’t Smile Movement is a continuation of the efforts associated with Healthy Polk 2020 and measures the progress the county is making in terms of healthy behaviors. We are measuring this progress by counting genuine smiles.

Description

The movement’s goal is to count smiles across the county. We hope to see a five percent increase in smiles year over year. Initially, the counts are being conducted around downtown Des Moines; however, this movement is replicable not only across the county but across the country. By counting smiles, the Don’t Smile Movement is building awareness of healthy behaviors and is broadening engagement in the pursuit of a healthier Polk County.
