Mission Statement

The Hospital Elder Life Program (H.E.L.P.)

A program helping seniors get the most out of their hospital stay.

Why is the Hospital Elder Life Program needed?

  • The elderly population is a vulnerable group with multiple chronic health conditions and special needs

  • People aged 65 and older account for more than 48% of all days of hospital care

  • Functional and cognitive decline and delirium (confusion) occur in 33-50% of hospitalized older people

  • Loss of independence and institutionalization are frequent outcomes

Volunteers will perform caring activities with patients aged 70 years and older.

Caring activities include:

1) Communication/Comfort - Keep patients aware, alert and oriented to their surroundings with equipment for hearing, vision and orientation.

2) Relaxation - Reduce stress and promotes better sleep. Eases symptoms of anxiety using breathing, music, hand/neck massage, nail painting and herbal tea.

3) Recreation - Offer interesting activities for the mind and body using talking, cards, puzzles and reading material.

4) Meals - Encourage healthy eating and drinking and offers companionship during mealtime. Volunteer training is provided.
