Mission Statement

The Filipino American Development Foundation exists to strengthen the social, physical, and economic well being of the Filipino American community and the South of Market community with special attention to the underserved segments of the community.

FADF's Mission will accomplish this by:

  • Increasing awareness and knowledge about the Filipino American community through participation in educational and cultural programs.
  • Increasing access to a wide range of economic, health and social services through collaboration with existing programs and the development of culturally appropriate services.
  • Providing a community space to strengthen community ties, to facilitate the sharing of resources and expertise among service providers in SOMA, and to build leadership skills and the capacity of service providers to effectively provide relevant social services to the community.

Description

The establishment of the Foundation was born out of a strong desire to coalesce the Filipino community in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Filipino Americans in San Francisco have worked for a long time to build a community center. An opportunity came about four years ago when Dr. Mario Borja, the Filipino owner of the Delta Hotel, negotiated the sale of the hotel to a South of

Market (SOMA) nonprofit developer, Tenants and Owners Development Corporation (TODCO). Part of the agreement in the sale was for TODCO to lease the first floor and basement of the 152 unit housing building to FADF for $1.00/year for 20 years. While the construction of the Bayanihan Community Center (BCC) is the first major project for the Foundation, it has participated significantly in community organizing in SOMA.
