Description
The Big Friend - Little Friend Program is a local organization dedicated to helping children. It provides Yankton area youth, ages 5-17, the opportunity to learn the value of being a good citizen through the modeling and example of a Big Friend adult volunteer. The program encourages constructive problem solving and self-worth recognition. Big Friend - Little Friend is a program designed to give young people the opportunity to gain the friendship and example of a sincere adult in a one-to-one relationship which supports the Little Friend and supplements the family structure.
Big Friend - Little Friend is primarily a prevention program seeking to intervene on behalf of youth, identified as "potentially at risk". It operates on the premise that consistent involvement with a mature and honorable adult volunteer will influence a child to make healthy decisions as he or she matures.
Big Friend - Little Friend makes an impact in the daily lives of 55 of Yankton's children. They are offered the chance for new experiences, opportunities, and for sharing new ideas. They are encouraged to use their own strengths and abilities to the fullest in school, at home, and when solving their own personal problems. Through example, they are shown respect and dignity for family, community and country.
The exceptional adults who join our program maintain high moral standards and share a love for children. They realize the importance of each and every child as a precious gift to our community. They also realize how much sharing the little things in life can encourage greatness in our children. So they have "put their hearts on the line" and become personally involved in a friendship with a child.
