Mission Statement
Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is Walt Whitman’s voice today, celebrating the poet’s vision of democracy, diversity, and creativity. Our programs and exhibits educate the public on Whitman’s life and times, explore his contribution to our nation’s rich cultural heritage, and inspire poets and writers.
Description
Walt Whitman was born in Huntington, Long Island, New York, on May 31, 1819, the second of nine children. His ancestors and family had lived in the West Hills area of South Huntington for over one hundred and twenty five years. Walt Whitman’s Birthplace, a State Historic Site listed on the National Register of Historic Places, still stands and commemorates his life, spirit, and legacy.

I loved working and volunteering here. The other volunteers are warm and interesting people who really enjoy their work. The historic site is beautiful and sharing the history of Long Island with guests was fulfilling and fun.
