Mission Statement

Special Olympics' mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-typr sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities, giving them continued opportunitites to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, expereince joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Volunteers enable Special Olympics West Virginia to offer sports training and competition through county programs preparing for state events. It's the dedication of our volunteers that increase integration and socialization opportunities for Special Olympics athletes. The volunteers provide mainstreaming experience in and outside the playing arrena. No athlete is asked to pay to participate. Ages of athletes are 8 years - senior citizens. Volunteers in the county programs plan and carry out fundraising activities as well as serving in positions as coaches for sports training & competition planing, school outreach, professional supports, public awareness and media contacts, administration assistance, representation of civic groups and organizations and as family network support and friends. You can call or e-mail for a referral to the county program in your home area or you can volunteer at one of the four state events: Summer Games, held in Charleston June 2-4, 2006 / Fall Games held in Parkersburg / Winter Games held in Canaan Valley and Spring Basktball, Cheerleading.
