Mission Statement

Green Spring Gardens’ mission is to support: • Adult and children’s education programs; • Interpretation and preservation of the Park’s horticultural, natural resources, and historical sites; • Horticultural developments of demonstration gardens, horticultural education, and interpretation; • Home owners and gardeners who come to the gardens seeking information on how to improve their built up environment in an ecologically responsible manner.

Description

Green Spring was donated to the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) in 1970 by Michael and Belinda Straight. The Straights purchased the property in 1942 and made several modifications to the 1784 historic house and accompanying gardens. The landscape around the Straight home was that of a 'gentleman farmer' and was used primarily for entertaining. Designed by Beatrix Farrand, the gardens included boxwood hedging, roses, and perennial borders.
