Mission Statement

AAWAA's MISSION IS: To cultivate the appreciation and understanding of the works of art of different cultures; To enable emerging women artists of Asian descent succeed in creating art and presenting their works to the diverse communities within New York City. To support experimental artistic expression, new media and cultural specific artwork through exhibitions and performances; To promote interest and appreciation of the local community in the Arts; To provide artistic/educational workshop for the community; To furnish a central place where women artists may seek support and information for professional growth; To foster cooperative activities among artists; and To facilitate multicultural exchange and contact among artists as well as artist groups.

Description

Asian American Women Artists Alliance, also known as AAWAA, was formed in1998 to create an intergenerational, pan-Asian organization on behalf of emerging and established Asian American women in the arts. Since its establishment in 1998, AAWAA has organized twenty-eight visual arts exhibitions, sponsored fifteen performances, published eight catalogs for exhibition documentation, created an informational website, worked with New York City public schools for art in education, and also coordinated three year?s Saturday art workshops for immigrant children?all through the volunteer efforts of our artist members. AAWAA received its 501c(3) status in 1999. Since then, we have served over 500 women artists and our combined programs have reached more than 2,000 people annually in the New York Metropolitan area.
