Mission Statement
Global Youth Education and Success seeks to provide an annual intensive Autumn and Spring STEM and English language program to motivate promising high school youth in the United States, South Africa, and other African countries to enroll in STEM subjects in high school so that their chance of obtaining scholarships to successfully pursue STEM careers is enhanced.
Description
The main project of Global Youth Education and Success (GYES) is the the Math Institute South Africa (MISA). The project was started in 2012 as a result of the expressed concerns about the high failure rate of learners in Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 by the Western Cape Education Department, Cape Town, South Africa. The problem is that the high failure rate and the lows scores attained by those who passed has resulted in smaller numbers of learners enrolling in mathematics and science classes in the higher grades. The purpose of the MISA is to provide an annual two-week Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program in the Western Cape Province to low performing, and promising high school learners in Grade 9 initially. Grade 10, 11, and 12 learners will be included in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year of the program, respectively.
