Mission Statement

LEVYdance’s mission is to create art that ignites awareness of our shared human experience.

Description

LEVYdance is based in San Francisco's SOMA district at LEVYstudio. Founded in 2002 by Artistic Director Benjamin Levy, LEVYdance is a recognized performing arts organization with a distinct aesthetic described as "athletic and lyrical, brainy and sexy" (Dance Magazine). Levy's signature aesthetic is a vibrant landscape of physical action and reaction - under his direction, dance artists express personal narrative in physical currents, engaging and responding in cinematic scenarios of human intimacy.

Beyond performing in traditional venues, LEVYdance also creates installation performance experiences that seek to redefine the relationship between performer and audience. The company has blended new media and dance into an installation that invited the audience inside the performance space, performed as a flash mob at public outdoor sites, and seated audience members and dancers together at banquet tables for an interactive performance experience. LEVYdance's performance of ROMP was named one of the Bay Area's "Top Ten Dance Moments of 2011" by the San Francisco Chronicle and in 2013 LEVYdance received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance for their 2012 production of Low Down.
