Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Founded in 2005, Free I.T. Athens is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to providing reclaimed and refurbished technology as well as educational opportunities to those in need. We are also advocates for free software and free technology.
Arguably Athens’s oldest technology nonprofit, Free I.T. Athens combines the power of community collaboration, free software and rescued technology and changes lives and the environment for the better. Since its founding,
Free I.T. Athens has responsibly rescued over 70 tons of unusable equipment from landfills and distributed over 2,000 refurbished computers to individuals, community groups, churches and nonprofits in Cameroon, El Salvador, Peru and the United States.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Volunteering at Free I.T. Athens is a great opportunity for individuals to gain hands on experience working with computers, for tech savvy individuals to share their knowledge, and for everyone to help make an impact in the Athens, Georgia community.
Computer experience is not required for volunteering at Free I.T. Athens, but an open mind and willingness to learn is!
Many of our volunteers:
- Help people with computer problems
- Refurbish donated computers
- Support community organizations
- Recruit and manage volunteers
- Conduct community organizing, outreach and organizational promotion
- Maintain and improve technical infrastructure
- Conduct sales and marketing
- Sort donations and test equipment
- Answer telephone and e-mail communication
- Assist in computer trainings
HOW DO I VOLUNTEER?
Prior to volunteering, all potential volunteers are required to attend a new volunteer orientation session.
The session is conducted at our 160 Winston Drive, Suite #9 offices and is designed to orient new volunteers with our operations, organizational policies and expectations. For the next available orientation, please see our calendar.
No computer experience required.
No registration required.
Please be sure to arrive on time as latecomers will be turned away.
VOLUNTEERS AGED 15-17
Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age. Volunteers 15-17 years of age that wish to work independently are required to have their parent or legal guardian sign our youth permission form prior to performing any volunteer service. Free I.T. Athens does not offer childcare and unattended children are not allowed on the premises.
COURT MANDATED COMMUNITY SERVICE
We accept court ordered community service volunteers for non-violent and non-larceny offenses.
After 12 hours of volunteer service, volunteers are eligible to take home a refurbished single core desktop computer system. After 30 hours of volunteer service, volunteers are eligible to take home either a refurbished dual core desktop computer system or a refurbished laptop computer system -- not both and once per annual period!
Volunteers may also earn the option of being officially recognized as a staff member of Free I.T. Athens after 30 hours. Staff are volunteers who regularly visit open hours, can work independently, and can lead others in at least one area we work in.
Each staff member also takes on a share of the projects and administrative work that occurs outside of our regular office hours. Staff meet once a year to elect the board of directors.
Staff membership must be approved by the Board of Directors.
