Description

The Bronx Opera has been mounting fully-staged operatic productions with orchestra for almost 40 years. It is based in the Bronx (at Lehman College) but also performs regularly in Manhattan (Hunter College, the Museo del Barrio) and Nassau County (Hofstra University). The performers are young professionals in pursuit of careers in opera, but the company seeks members of the community as choristers and in other roles. Ticket prices are kept low and the operas are sung in English to attract audiences from the local community. In addition, there is a program at selected Bronx minority schools for performers in upcoming operas to discuss them with the students, to offer special performances for them, and to attract them and their families to attend the full performances.
