Mission Statement

As a not-for-profit child welfare agency, the mission of Harlem Dowling-West Side Center for Children and Family Services is to serve and assist children and their families in crisis and distress.

Description

Harlem Dowing was one of the first charitable instiutions in the U.S. dedicated to children, and the very first to provide for "children of color"; founded in 1836 as the Colored Orphan Asylum.

Finding adoptive and foster families for children is the hallmark of the work of Harlem Dowling. However, finding alternative families for our children is secondary to exploring all means to support and preserve natural family bonds.

Harlem Dowling- West Side Center for Children and Family Services is a mulit-service agency providing out of home foster care, adoption, therapeutic placement, supportive housing for youth aging out of the foster care and other support services. Related services include family preservation, HIV/AIDS services, family support services and after school programs for children and families in Central Harlem, Washington Heights, Southeast Queens and Far Rockaway.
