Mission Statement

Every Child in School ...and Learning Well

Description

Pratham was started by UNICEF and volunteer education activists committed to providing primary education access to 2,000 slum-dwelling children in Dharavi, Mumbai in 1994. Today this initiative has expanded involving 10,000 education activists serving over 2.5 million underpriveleged children in direct and catalytic programs in 12 states and 30 cities all over India.

Pratham's success rests on an innovative low cost model in which it takes only $10-$12 per year to educate a child. The model brings together local governments, businesses and community. In this tripartite partnership model local community donates free-space to run the schools. Pratham contributes supplies and curriculum modules and hires local women with at least 10th grade education, and trains them to become teachers. The government provides access to the existing formal education system. Thus, Pratham's model empowers local women, involves local community, and most importantly, requires very low capital investment.

Pratham USA is primarily a fund raising arm of the organization that helps to take Pratham's message of universal education to the local communities. Pratham Bay Area started in 2004 and has over 400 donors and volunteers.

We are planning several cultural, children's, sports and other events throughout the year and need volunteers to help us organize these.
