Mission Statement
The mission of Second Chance is to create opportunities for self-sufficiency by providing job readiness training, employment placement, affordable housing and life skills for homeless and unemployed men, women and youth.
Description
Scott H Silverman started a non-profit organization 12 years ago whose mission is to live up to its name. Second Chance provides jobs, housing and supportive services for homeless men and women and youth.
In 1998, Second Chance began offering the nationally recognized STRIVE job readiness program which provides attitudinal training, job placement, mental health counseling, career clothing and two years of follow up services.
Combined with alcohol and drug-free housing, affordable housing placements and well-being referrals, Second Chance has established itself as an agency making a significant difference in San Diego.
Thousands of Second Chance clients are now productive members of our community. More than 250 San Diego employers have hired Second Chance/STRIVE graduates. Alcohol and drug-free housing through Second Chance's sober living as well as affordable housing referrals are provided to "hard-to-place" men and women. Over 1000 STRIVE graduates have found employment since August of 1998 in spite of non-traditional working pasts including incarceration, homelessness and substance abuse.
There are close to 15,000 homeless individuals in the county of San Diego and thousands of underemployed and unemployed men and women. Second Chance is dedicated to leading community collaborative efforts to minimize homelessness over the next 10 years.
