Mission Statement

The Los Angeles Public Library established an adult literacy program in 1984, recognizing the vital role libraries play in developing literacy skills and promoting a lifelong love of learning. The Adult Literacy Program (ALP) trains volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring in basic English reading and writing skills to adults throughout the City of Los Angeles. At the present time sixteen Literacy Centers, with literacy resources and staff, support this program which serves about five hundred students at any one time.

Description

Adult Literacy Program: Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adult learners who want to improve basic literacy skills. Tutors and students meet for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, twice a week, for a minimum of six months. Tutor-student pairs may choose to meet at any branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.

Families for Literacy (FFL) is a literacy program for parents and caregivers who are working to improve their own English literacy skills. Participants in the library's FFL program build their reading skills through work with literacy tutors, learn how to read to their children, and receive encouragement and guidance in making reading a daily family activity. Participants receive six free children's books.
