Mission Statement

Free2Be (GLBT Advocacy & Youth Services, Inc.) is dedicated to engaging in effective advocacy for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendere people. We are committed to ensuring the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of youth and young adults struggling due to sexual orientation or gender identity issues.

In addition to our offices being the Free2Be LGBTQ Resource Center our social services are provided through the Free2Be Safe Anti-Violence Project. We also produce Rocket City Pride.

The Free2Be Safe Anti-Violence Project is a culturally specific program designed to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and families living in Alabama. We are developing programming and services to raise community awareness of Intimate Partner Violence, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Bullying, and other forms of violence which damage all of us as individuals and as a society. This project is the first of its kind in Alabama to be designed to provide services to LGBTQ people and to increase awareness of violence as it affects LGBTQ people in Alabama.

Description

Free2Be (GLBT Advocacy & Youth Services, Inc.) is located in Huntsville, Alabama. The agency was established to meet the diverse needs of the underserved gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community in Alabama & throughout the South.

We are very excited to be entering our 6th year of service to the LGBTQ people of the South. During our first 5 years we have grown from a fledging agency to a well established regionally recognized community service organization that values the well-being of all people. We have established deep ties with our local community and enjoy collabrative relationships with many organizations.

We recognize that through relationships with other organizations and agencies we are able to share resources while breaking down barriers based upon misinformation. The agency envisions and works toward creating a community free of prejudice, discrimination, and the fear of personal attacks and other forms of violence and hatred.

Our efforts to build bridges of understanding and acceptance are well-known throughout Huntsville and across the region. We are committed to serving the under-served part of rural communities and minorities with effective and empowering programs that will leave a lifetime’s worth of impact on our community.

The LGBTQ community is often discriminated. Especially for LGBT youth. No one actually really listens to the other side of the story, the discrimination of our LGBT community causes depression and stress for them. This leads most to cutting or other forms of self harm as a relief. Self harm is common in our youth LGBT, it’s actually more common than you think. Good Grades, Peer Pressure, Family Struggles, etc. Parents are oblivious about how much this affects every child, even their children, even if they aren’t LGBT. Only 20 states and the District of Columbia have anti-discrimination or anti-bullying laws that explicitly protect LGBT students. Approximately 55% of LGBT youth live in states that do not have laws that explicitly protect them from bullying and discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. School-based supports continue to have a positive effect on school climate. Students with LGBT parents may be negatively affected by anti-LGBT bias and hate.
