Mission Statement

To provide at-risk children with better educational opportunities and to involve community members in the education of our nation's children.

Description

The Education Exchange Corps recruits college students and other volunteers to work in St. Louis City schools as teaching assistants during the regular academic year and as instructors during our summer academies.

Teaching assistants are placed directly in classrooms under the direction of a partner teacher to design a program to help the kids in that particular classroom. Teaching assistants serve as tutors, mentors, and general classroom aides depending on the needs of the children there.

Summer instructors provide a neighborhood of kids with summer experiences they normally would not have with a focus on hands-on activities that teach children in fun ways. Summer Instructors serve as leaders in our summer academy, working in teams with groups of children. The purpose of the summer academy is to provide kids with an educational experience that builds confidence. Summer Instructors develop lesson plans, lead group activities, decorate classrooms, and receive support from staff throughout. This position is a great opportunity to gain experience in classroom management in a school serving at-risk children. Instructors often develop long-lasting relationships with the children they teach.
