Mission Statement

Since 1987, Zen Hospice Project develops groundbreaking programs and services to bring mindfulness and compassionate care to the dying, their caregivers, and the bereaved. Zen Hospice Project (ZHP) is inspired by the practice of alleviating suffering and uniquely experienced to address the unnecessary anguish and stress associated with facing our mortality. Beyond physical pain, ZHP also addresses emotional, spiritual, and existential pain, each of which left unattended can prove tremendous sources of suffering, especially at end-of-life. Through a secular approach ZHP integrates clinical care with deep compassion and inter-connectedness that has proven to be an essential and transformative experience for patients, families, and caregivers alike. Our primary geographic focus is the Bay Area but our impact has gained national and international relevance.

Description

Our approach to hospice care is one of facing death with open hearts and careful attention. When someone comes to live with us at the Guest House, we invite them to experience the final days, weeks, and months of life just as they are. Whether their time with us is characterized by curiosity or confusion, joy or sorrow, fear or love (and usually it’s all of these), we respond with kindness and understanding. There are multiple practices that we put into action, but the three we emphasize are mindfulness, forgiveness, and loving-kindness.
