Mission Statement
Aseltine School helps meet the educational needs of severely emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students throughout San Diego County. Aseltine staff partner with these "at-risk" youth and imaginatively challenge, support and prepare them to:
- Gain better understanding and insight into the barriers that have limited their access to "mainstream" school and community;
- Develop the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to overcome these barriers;
- Develop the self-esteem that transforms fatalism and self-doubt into purposeful action, and
- Make an independent and productive transition back into school, employment, and the community.
Description
Since 1968, Aseltine School has filled a void in the public school system by partnering with San Diego’s K-12 students whose serious needs can not be met in the public schools. Aseltine’s unique approach to Special Education, which emphasizes conflict resolution and problem solving as the first step toward learning, empowers "at-risk" youth whose disabilities and difficult home lives have inhibited their success in school and in the community to date. Unlike behavior modification, the traditional approach to Special Education, Aseltine staff work with students as equal partners in their education process, empowering them as active participants in their own lives. This approach gives these students control over and an investment in their futures. In addition to a rigorous academic program, Aseltine offers students the support and guidance they require to gain the knowledge, skills and sense of self-worth that help them break the cycle of poverty, abuse, addiction and neglect so they can develop themselves into confident, positive community members and loving, encouraging parents and spouses.
