Mission Statement

The mission of Global Education Fund is to increase educational opportunities for underrepresented individuals. Working primarily in orphanages, GEF has established literacy centers in eighteen countries around the world.

Description

In an effort to reduce illiteracy rates worldwide, Global Education
Fund was founded by anthropologist Eliza Woloson in 1997. Since its inception,
Global Education Fund has had a policy of listening to the educational needs
of children living in orphanages and remote villages around the world.
What we find is often needed is books. GEF gets most of its books donated from
U.S. libraries. However, to fill the gap between books donated and books
needed, the Global Education Fund purchases books at a discount from publishing
companies and distributors. Because Global Education Fund listens to
the needs of the orphanage community, as well as send books, GEF has also
sent volunteers to communities with high illiteracy rates, implemented
formalized storytelling and reading groups, and assisted our international
partners in the building of libraries.
