Mission Statement

Special Dragons mission is to provide exercise and self-defense lessons for students with special needs. Martial arts are used as a vehicle to address physical and cognitive difficulties our students have as a result of developmental disabilities. Special Dragons provides strategies to prevent bullying against children with special needs, and spreads autism and special-needs awareness through education and integration of non-affected peers.

Description

Special Dragons’ mission is to teach children with special needs how to transfer the lessons from the dojo into academic success in the classroom and in life. Special Dragons considers several important issues: Karate instruction that addresses each child’s special need (physical or cognitive), and anti-bullying, all while expanding parental employment opportunities. The program was conceived by special educator and black-belt karate instructor George Bostory, who partnered with his boyhood friend and businessman John M. Larkin to create Special Dragons in March, 2012. Special Dragons is part of a 501(c)(3) group exemption of the Amateur Athletic Union of America (AAU), as determined by the Internal Revenue Code.

Special Dragons uses karate as a vehical to adderss ballence, coordination, motor controll, and other physical challanges faced by children with special needs. The program is open to children with any kind of chalange, but the program services many children with autism.
