Mission Statement

The goals of Heritage of Healing are four-fold and will be instituted in four stages. These goals are thus:

v To increase awareness, especially among our youth, of healthy lifestyle choices that can help reduce the risk of cancers, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

v To build an emotional foundation, and to provide solace and comfort through gathering.

v To help families experiencing cancers and other chronic diseases retain a sense of normalcy through the Heritage of Healing Child Relief Program, dedicated to providing some of the normal day-to-day things that are hard to maintain when undergoing treatment, such as new school clothes, winter coats, trips to movies, summer camps, etc.

v To establish homes near major hospitals in the US where families can stay while receiving treatment, as Native families are often too far from hospitals to receive regular treatment.

Description

Heritage of Healing is Native American-led, woman-led nonprofit organization dedicated to providing for children in families that are experiencing difficulties due to cancer or other serious diseases. In addition to providing our Wellness Education Program, we strive to build a sense of community in which these families can feel that they belong and are "normal," are accepted and are understood, without being pitied. We do not provide counseling in any way; rather, we provide a place for those who have something in common to come together to participate in activities that have nothing to do with the illness that can often become the center of their lives. While our program is designed for Native American families, as they are often the most underserved population, we do not limit our services only to those families. We do not turn away any families that ask for assistance as long as we have the resources to provide it.
