Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Mission Statement Newtown provides a safe supervised educational rersource center, which offers lifelong learning, opportuinities, and emphasizes the historical heritage of the Newtown neighborhood.
The need is continual and it stems from the high number of children in and around our community who have failing grades and who stand in need of after-care tutorial assistance, and homework help. Many suffer because of under-developed study habits, a lack of homework assistance from parents who typically work two jobs to support the household and who are simply not able to help ,or unavailable to help to the level that is needed by the child. These 'at-risk children' need tutoring and educational instruction that only skilled and qualified tutors can provide, in a structured safe and supervised environment. The neighborhood itself showcase the need based on the 22% adult population of non-high school graduates, and a 66% low moderate income level. Income Characteristics of Each Neighborhood/School (Source: 2000 /2010 US Census) 66% low moderate income 22% of adults do not have a high school diploma 49% of the adults only have a high school diploma The majority of homes were built before 1949 *http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/
