Come support our Home Delivery Program serving 500 household across South Seattle. This program supports our homebound and immunocompromised clients who are unable to come into the food bank. Volunteers help pack bags of groceries to be delivered to up to clients' doors each week. Shifts are available Wednesdays 9am -11am and Thursdays 9am- 12pm. We welcome weekly volunteers as well as those who can only help once in a while. This is physical work in a modified warehouse setting. Volunteers should be able to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted and up to 50 lbs with assistance, bend, reach, grasp, and move around safely in a busy space. If you would like to volunteer but cannot meet these physical requirements, contact volunteer@rvfb.org to find a role that fits your skills. Children as young as 6 are welcome to volunteer with an adult present. RVFB does verify community service hours for school, work, or court. Ask staff how to track your hours! Want to help reduce landfill-bound waste? Rainier Valley Food Bank needs volunteers to help manage the proper sorting of our waste to reduce our environmental impact! 1-2 volunteers each distribution day will collect waste bins (trash, recycling, compost), sort into the proper dumpster. They will also unpackage unusable foods for composting. As time allows, waste reduction volunteers will also help break down cardboard, rinse containers for recycling, keep the grounds free of litter. There is also opportunity to do food rescue work by diverting food from our compost and connecting to neighbors with chickens or other livestock and bulk cooking foods "on the edge" (take home or to others, RVFB does not currently have appropriate kitchen facilities). Qualifications: comfortable working with waste. We will provide gloves (and apron if desired). Can lift up to 30 lbs unassisted, 50lbs assisted. Necessary motor skills to open packaging, sort waste, and place into dumpsters. Attention to detail No previous experience necessary. Training will be provided. Come support our community by helping distribute healthy food to our hungry neighbors! "In-person shopping" shifts are Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30am - 11am and 11:30am - 2:30 PM. You are welcome to sign up for both shifts if desired, but we will fully close for lunch between shifts with no volunteer work or staff support during this time so that we can care for ourselves before continuing to care for the community. You are encouraged to have lunch and hang out with fellow volunteers while we take a break! Distribution Volunteers may: Set up distribution center for shopping welcome clients help guests load selected food into their bags hand out to-go lunches monitor stations clean up after shopping, reset warehouse for next shift/day Translate for guests* *We serve a very diverse community with over 14 languages spoken. Goal of the position: Every Wednesday & Thursday, we deliver grocery bags to our clients who are disabled or immunocompromised and unable to come to the food bank in person. As a home delivery driver, you will drive your own vehicle to deliver 15-25 bags of food to a set list of clients in South Seattle. Requirements: * Valid driver’s license * Background check * Availability Wednesday and/or Thursdays. Pick up times available 10am -11:30 am(Wednesday) and 10am - 2:30pm (Thursday). Plan for 3 hours, many routes take less time. * Highly personable and works well with others * Minimum 3 month commitment desired - you do not have to commit to every week. Responsibilities: * Safely deliver bags to 15-25 clients each Wednesday/Thursday (occasional volunteers also welcome) * Check in on client’s welfare as possible, report concerns and changes in needs to home delivery coordinator Our food bank could not operate at this scale without a cadre of committed, long-term community volunteers who contribute over 2,000 hours of service every month. Skills Needed: * Punctual, dependable, enthusiastic, flexible and positive attitude * Strong communication skills. Both to clients and with RVFB coordination staff * Outgoing and enjoys working with people and helping clients * Must be able to work in both calm and fast-paced environments * Comfortable with diverse populations in high energy settings * Multi-lingual is a huge plus! Ensure food guests are informed correctly of policies and procedures as well as supporting them in communicating their needs.
