Mission Statement

It is our mission to stabilize and create environmentally responsible communities through the provision of affordable housing, training, and economic development for very-low, low, and moderate income families in Middle TN. To be an education source in housing, finances, and urban agriculture that is culturally, economically, and socially inclusive.

Description

Green and Healthy Communities is a non-profit organization seeking to create a greener landscape for Middle TN. Our goal with the Nashville Urban Food Forests project (N.U.F.F) is to plant food forests through a pay-it-forward skill share model in Nashville, particularly the designated "food deserts", that engages young adults, provides nutritious food and creates green space. Sometimes depeding on the resident these systems can also be income producing.

The food forest model involves three or more layers of fruit growth and is more permanent than an annual based food system. These perennial plantings include canopy trees such as pear, bush/shrub layer such as blueberries and understory species or more traditional annual crops and perennial herbs. This will make a long-lasting impact on the community and provide young adults the knowledge, resources and inspiration to make positive change.

The goals of these implementations are to:

-create or add to edible, perennial landscapes where someone lives

-build community networks

-practice regenerative agriculture in an urban setting

-environmental and cultural stewardship.

Eventually, we hope to be able to plant food forests in other neighborhoods.
