MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private-sector organization in the world. Locally, MDA sponsors research efforts at IU Medical Center and Ball State University.
While striving to find treatments and cures, MDA also works to improve the quality of life for the children and adults we serve. The Association's comprehensive service program includes medical examinations, flu shots, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters and assistance with purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces.
MDA seeks to increase knowledge and awareness of neuromuscular disease among scientists, health care professionals, and the public. The Association sponsors scientific publications, convenes international scientific meetings, and holds conferences. It also publishes and distributes a vast array of educational materials.
MDA is one of 65 member health agencies of the Community Health Charities, which represents MDA in the Combined Federal Campaign. From the time this fund-raising program was established in 1957, MDA has annually met the government's strict standards for agency objectives, administrative integrity and financial responsibility. MDA is the first nonprofit organization honored with the American Medical Association's Lifetime Achievement Award "for significant and lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity."
