Days for Girls International is creating a more dignified, humane and sustainable world for girls through advocacy, reproductive health awareness, education and sustainable feminine hygiene. Women and girls discover their potential and self-value, are equal participants and agents of social change and are given opportunities to thrive, grow and contribute to their community’s betterment while ensuring quality sustainable feminine hygiene for every girl, everywhere. Period.
Days for Girls International empowers girls, women and communities in 101 nations (and growing) on 6 continents, reversing the cycle of poverty in a simple, direct, effective and surprising way: We help women have access to sustainable feminine hygiene. One of the major causes of disempowerment of girls who are in poverty is their monthly cycle. Many girls cannot afford feminine hygiene products and as a result cannot attend school. A girl absent from school due to menstruation for 4 days of every 28 day cycle loses 13 learning days, the equivalent of two weeks of learning every school term. Studies show that every year of schooling increasing a girl's future earning power by 10 to 20 percent, allowing her to break the cycle of poverty. There are millions of girls and women worldwide who suffer days of isolation, infection, and exploitation due to this single issue-- it will take all of us to reach all of them. With attention to collaboration, and responsiveness to local feedback Days for Girls tackles large systemic challenges with simple solutions that are turning out to be key to social changes.
I've sewn shields, liners & bags for this organization for many years. It's a great way to get involved on your own time and energy level. Most of the fabric that I use is either donated or purchasedate at 40% discount so I consider my time & the postage to Washington state as my donation. Getting your period in many countries around the world, means time out of school. Girls are punished bc they get their periods! I feel like I'm contributing to more than just one girl because when if one more girl can go to school, then one more girl can be educated. Education is the main goal of this project. I was a teacher myself for over 30 years, so being able to help girls continue their education is my motivation. I'm so grateful that i found this project years ago.
It's a lovely project, but surprisingly impactful. And I love the hand-on nature, rather than simply sending money somewhere. Amazingly well-run, considering it's all volunteer. Also, I love how it brings together women from all walks of life, and I get warm fuzzies when I see men involved
